Brass sheet/plate
Standards: ASTM B-21, ASTM B-124, ASTM B-171, SAE J461, SAE J463, SAE 73, AMS 4611, AMS 4612, DIN 3.053
Naval Brass C46400 is nominally composed of 60% copper, 39.2% zinc, and 0.8% tin. As is typical of brass alloys with the duplex alpha + beta structure, C46400 has good strength and rigidity. By substituting tin for an equal quantity of zinc, a high corrosion resistance to seawater is achieved. The addition of tin also gives the alloy an inherent resistance to dezincification, thereby further inhibiting the impingement by seawater at higher than normal temperatures. The alloy is also noted for its resistance to wear, fatigue, galling, and stress corrosion cracking.

International Standards

copper plates conform to the following global standards:

Standard SystemDesignationScope
ASTM (USA)ASTM B36/B36M-23Covers brass plates, sheets, strips, and rolled bars
GB (China)GB/T 5231-2012 (H95, H96)Equivalent to C21000; specifies mechanical properties and chemical composition.
JIS (Japan)JIS C2100Matches  for industrial brass plates.
DIN (Germany)CuZn5 / 2.0220Denotes brass with ~95% Cu and 5% Zn
EN (Europe)CW500LStandardizes CuZn5 alloy for sheet/plate applications.

Chemical Composition

high-copper brass alloy (also classified as "red brass") with a primary composition of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), along with trace elements. The exact chemical limits are standardized under ASTM specifications such as ASTM B36/B36M and ASTM B587. Here is the detailed composition:

ElementContent Range (wt%)Notes
Copper (Cu)94.0–96.0%Primary constituent
Zinc (Zn)BalanceTypically 4–6% (residual)
Lead (Pb)≤0.05%Strictly controlled impurity
Iron (Fe)≤0.05%Impurity limit per ASTM B36
Other Impurities≤0.3% (total)Includes P, Sb, Bi, etc. [1](#user-content-ref-4), [3](#user-content-ref-6), [18](#user-content-ref-12), [31](#user-content-ref-22)
